Empowering Children Through Digital Storytelling and Journalism: Building Creative Expression, Media Literacy, and Digital Content Production Skills
Digital Stories
Two Digital Stories training courses were conducted for 35 children aged 8–14. The program guided participants through the complete storytelling process, from developing their ideas into written scripts to transforming them into short videos. Children learned the fundamentals of scriptwriting, filming, video editing, and post-production, ultimately producing their own 1–2 minute digital stories.
One participant, Ibrahim (9), from Dheisheh Refugee Camp, shared:
"I really enjoyed the training. It helped me think about the story I want to tell. In my film, I want to talk about the word 'camp.' People around the world often think camping means forests, campfires, and watching the stars. But for me, a camp is a refugee camp. I want to show the world what a camp means to me."
Young Journalist
The Young Journalist training engaged 20 children in developing essential journalism, media, and digital communication skills. Participants learned the fundamentals of news reporting, interviewing, visual storytelling, and content creation, enabling them to produce their own reports and stories independently while experiencing what it is like to work as a journalist in front of the camera.
The training also introduced participants to media and information literacy, including the use of AI-generated content. Children learned how to distinguish between authentic and AI-generated images, critically assess digital content, and understand social media community guidelines, posting policies, and ethical standards to avoid publishing misleading, harmful, or non-compliant content.
